John Lewis – the founder of bespoke kitchen and bedroom furniture manufacturer and retailer John Lewis of Hungerford – has resigned as a director of the company with immediate effect.

Lewis, who started the company more than 40 years ago said: “I leave the company in the good hands of the new management team.” His resignation follows MD Jon Rosby stepping down last year and the resignation of finance director Karen Stanley.

Chairman Gary O’Brian said: “I would like to express my gratitude and the gratitude of the board to John Lewis for his many years of service and his obvious contribution as founder of the company. John's vision and enthusiasm was the foundation of building the business to what it is today.”

The company’s Harrogate and Tunbridge Wells showrooms were closed last year following “a review of its trading estate”.
