Mark Wilkinson OBE, the founder of Mark Wilkinson Furniture, has passed away after a battle against cancer at the age of 66 at his home in Wiltshire.

Cabinetmaker and designer Wilkinson founded his company in 1981, with his first fitted kitchen commission becoming the inspiration and model for the English country-style kitchen. In 2009, his company was sold to Canburg and he was made group creative director. He was also co-founder of Smallbone of Devizes.

He was awarded an OBE for services to the furniture industry and charity in 2011, and has been recognised as “one of the finest furniture makers in the world”, his company said.

Wilkinson was a fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers, as well as a fellow of the City and Guilds Institute and a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers of the City of London.
