A new survey by Neff and environmental charity Hubbub as part of their new joint Kitchen Love campaign has found that close to half of today’s grandparents have never cooked with their grandchildren, with 44% saying they worry that “a lack of cooking skills will harm their health”.

The new survey was launched to coincide with the recent National Grandparents’ Day, with the Kitchen Love campaign designed to “promote the joy of cooking together and preserve historical recipes”, according to Neff.

The poll – which questioned 1,000 UK grandparents – also found that three quarters wish their grandchildren would “spend more time in the kitchen and less time looking at screens”. The new Kitchen Love campaign will include a digital archive to “preserve family favourite recipes”.

Close to two thirds of grandparents said they learned to cook when they were children, and 80% had learned by the time they were in their early 20s. However, only half taught their own children, while 17% admitted to not passing on cooking skills to their children at all.

“Over half of grandparents told us they want to cook more with their grandchildren so we’re really excited about what Kitchen Love can achieve in reminding people of the joys of cooking together,” said Neff group marketing manager Jo Eyers.

“We would also encourage anyone with a favourite old family recipe to get involved with the Neff online recipe book so that these pieces of history are not forgotten. By harnessing these historic recipes and sharing cooking skills and knowledge, we’re hopeful of reducing food waste as people become more confident creating meals from ingredients that would otherwise be thrown away.”
