A new survey by specialist trend monitoring company Trend-Monitor has uncovered several things that Brits do in the bathroom – aside from the obvious – as part of a seven-day confidential study called Behind the Bathroom Door.

More than 20% of homeowners wash their dogs in the bathroom, either in the bath or the shower, the survey found, while 41% said that they like to read a book, newspaper or magazine in the bath, and a further 7% like to listen to the radio or watch films and TV shows while bathing.

One in five participants added that they like to enjoy a glass of wine in the bath, while 30% like to use candles or dim the lights to “create the right ambience”.

However, the majority noted that they prefer to take their showers alone, with reasons given including they don’t find sharing a shower hygienic and don’t want distractions. One participant revealed: “We shared our shower just once… it wasn’t as much fun as we thought it would be and nothing like the movies.”

Worryingly, participants in the survey admitted to using the toilet to dispose of paper, sanitary products, dental floss and nail clippings, as well as pouring soup, gravy and dirty mop water down the toilet. Perhaps the new discovery of the 64-metre-long ‘fatberg’ beneath Sidmouth, Devon will encourage people to be more careful with what they flush.
