SMWF Limited – the new owner of Smallbone of Devizes, Mark Wilkinson Furniture and Brookmans – recently marked National Apprenticeship Week by presenting an apprenticeship award at its Smallbone workshop in Devizes with Devizes MP Claire Perry.

The award – which was presented to Kyle Smith – was established to “nurture the next generation of furniture makers” and is open to all apprentices on the apprenticeship programme with SMWF. Smith’s dressing table was chosen as the winner based on the “function and aesthetics” of his design, SMWF said, as well as the quality of his original CAD drawing and written work.

Smith received a handcrafted award as well as a cash prize of £1,000. Josh Scott and Harley Woodman received the runners-up prizes of a certificate and gift voucher for their shoe cupboard and chest of drawers, respectively.

“Local businesses like Smallbone are such a vital and vibrant part of our community, providing jobs and supporting the next generation of skilled workers and I am very proud that SMWF craftsmanship from Devizes is so highly regarded across the world,” said Perry.

SMWF Limited executive chairman Ian Gray added: “We are extremely proud of the programme and our commitment to maintaining traditional craftsmanship and furniture making skills. With three generations of furniture maker in the Devizes workshop, we hope this award will help us to maintain this tradition.”
