The Furniture Industry Research Association – FIRA – has published its new ‘The General Product Safety Directive, a guide to legislation and its application in the furniture industry’, authored by FIRA International technical manager Suzie Radcliffe-Hart.

The 43-page guide is designed to support the furniture industry in “understanding the scope of the General Product Safety Directive” – GPSD – which ensures that only safe products are sold on the market. It is an EU Directive that is anticipated to remain in UK law post-Brexit.

FIRA’s new guide includes sections on the primary objective of the GPSD and what makes a ‘safe’ product; what products are covered and not covered by the GPSD; and who the GPSD applies to, with a “close look at producers and distributors and their obligations”.

The guide also covers placing products on the market and making the product available; and how products are assessed for safety, including risk assessments, reasonably foreseeable use and misuse, hazard marketing and warnings, and voluntary European Standards.

Lastly, due diligence, technical documentation, penalties and offences, and the PAS 7100: 2018 Code of practice on consumer product safety-related recalls and other corrective actions will also be covered in the guide.

“The implications of the GPSD on the furniture sector are vast,” said author Radcliffe-Hart. “Adherence to the Directive is key in order to avoid consequences from potential prosecution to negative publicity.

“In writing the guide my aim was to highlight the importance of the GPSD, and offer very practical advice along the way. It’s key to remember that the Directive doesn’t replace standards and legislation which are mandatory for our sector, but instead it complements. This is perhaps why there is less focus on the GPSD from a compliance perspective. But prosecutions do happen.”
