Fitted kitchen, bedroom and bathroom manufacturer Symphony Group recently sponsored the 95th edition of the Royal Society of Arts – RSA – Student Design Awards alongside Blum UK, Blanco Kessebohmer, The Kitchen Education Trust – TKET – and the National Innovation Centre for Ageing.

The winners of the awards were unveiled at a ceremony in June, with Sara Alber winning for her Touchpoint design, Ben Capern for his Flow design and Louis Farnsworth, pictured with Kate Dundas, the RSA’s team leader of city plans for the City of Melbourne, for his Core design.

The brief for this year’s awards was ‘Beyond the Kitchen Table’, where students were asked to develop an inclusive kitchen product or spatial solution that “enables people of diverse ages and needs to prepare and eat food, entertain, engage in hobbies or work and enjoy life together”.

Sara Alber’s Touchpoint is a plate and bowl designed for people with ADHD “to direct their focus on the food they are eating through tactile stimuli”. Ben Capern’s Flow design is a stabilising mixing bowl to aid cake preparation for low dexterity, while Louis Farnsworth’s Core range of kitchen safety knives were design to protect users from cuts and lacerations.

“We’d like to thank each one of the participants for taking the time to submit their entry this year, the winners and runners up have been absolutely fantastic,” said Symphony Group marketing head Robert Newton.

“We’re really pleased to continue our relationship with RSA Student Awards again this year and we’ve been inspired by some of the designs we’ve seen this year; some of these designs would work perfectly in our inclusive kitchen brand of Freedom kitchens.”
