Formica Group recently commissioned a survey to “better understand what makes a bathroom good or bad” by asking 2,000 consumers about their most common public bathroom bugbears, including hygiene, maintenance and design.

The survey found that “toilets leave a lasting impression”, Formica said, adding that the British public is “underwhelmed” with toilets in places serving food and drink, with only 5% considered “spotless”.

The public are most reluctant to use train toilets, followed by nightclubs and motorway services, with hygiene and bad smells being identified as the biggest issues alongside poor maintenance. A quarter of those surveyed said they check the toilets before deciding where to eat or drink.

Two thirds of those questioned also said that the cleanliness of a bathroom “reflects the quality of the food served”, while two out of five said the style and décor of a public bathroom “impacted whether they were comfortable using the facilities”.

When asked what they wanted to see in a bathroom, features that improved hygiene ranked as most popular – two thirds of respondents said they would prefer ‘hands-free’ toilet experience, but said that Japanese-style wash and dry technology was “unnecessary”.

There is “high demand” for basic privacy, Formica noted, adding that more than 40% said soundproofing was important. Just 5% said they didn’t mind unisex toilets, but around half of respondents would prefer gender-specific bathrooms.
