Independent tile and natural stone distributor and retailer Al Murad – which operates more than 70 stores across the UK – has acquired the intellectual property assets of British Ceramic Tile – BCT – which fell into administration in January.

Intellectual property advisor Hilco Streambank said the acquisition follows a “competitive bidding process” after Anthony Wright, Alistair Massey and Andrew Sheridan of FRP Advisory were appointed joint administrators of the company.

Al Murad has purchased the British Ceramic Tile and National Tile Week brands as well as registered trade marks, the recently relaunched e-commerce site, domain names, and an “extensive portfolio of appealing product designs”.

“We are delighted to have found a fitting home for the British Ceramic Tile brand, designs and other key assets, following a competitive sales process,” said Hilco Streambank managing director Nat Baldwin. “We congratulate Al Murad on its strategic acquisition.”

Al Murad operations manager Asif Badat added: “British Ceramic Tile is recognized as a leading ceramic wall and floor tiles brand globally, known for innovative British design-led products. We were determined to keep the brand in Britain.

“Following this acquisition, we are stronger positioned to provide not only our existing customers but now also ex-BCT customers with a wide range of creative, unique and high quality tiles which are sourced globally at very competitive prices.”

When the Devon-based ceramic tile manufacturer fell into administration in January, more than 310 members of staff were made redundant as the business ceased trading with immediate effect “after losing a key customer contract”.
